Yoga Pearl 300-Hour Yoga Teacher Training
Advanced Anatomy for Asana
with Kira Simone + Joe Millen, P.T.
Prerecorded content to be completed on your own time
15 Hours
Delve into the world of how the human body works within an asana practice! We’ll learn about the inner anatomical workings of yoga poses, and how to apply that knowledge when teaching a class. Rather than going pose-by-pose, you’ll learn about how the body moves and functions in groupings of asana. For example, how backbends require us to move vs how forward folds require us to move. This course is designed to provide yoga teachers with a more thorough understanding of how the moving parts of our bodies come together within each category of asana.
What You’ll Learn:
The anatomy of standing poses, balancing poses, backbends, forward folds, inversions, twists, side bends, hip openers, and arm balances
Understanding how your own unique anatomy shapes the way you practice
How to give practical, safe cues for alignment when teaching
How to apply asana as a tool for strength, agility, and healing while avoiding common injuries
Schedule:
10 Hours of prerecorded content
5 Hours of homework
Can be completed in your own time
Pricing:
$425 for just this module
$4,200 for all modules
About Kira Simone:
After graduating with a BA in theater in 2005, I got my first taste of yoga when I was visiting my very bossy aunt in Hawaii. She made me get up every morning and do a 90 minute Hatha practice with her- it was hard, and I hated it! When I left Hawaii a few weeks later, though, I felt different: stronger, taller, and a lot calmer.
Back home in New York, I discovered Vinyasa at a local studio and realized that yoga could be like a spiritually transformative dance.
Beyond the obvious physical benefits, it changed my life by helping me regulate my emotions and find freedom from outside pressures.
I did my first teacher training in 2010 at Sonic Yoga in NYC and I've been teaching for a living ever since! Additional trainings since then include biomechanics, Reiki, Yoga Nidra, Thai Partner Yoga, etc, but my most valuable education was to take extensive post-graduate classes in psychology and anatomy/physiology, and then to shadow an occupational therapist for 100 hours, which taught me how to safely offer self-care to a spectrum of special populations.
I love guiding a roomful of people through breath, movement, and their imaginations. These days I also love to guide other yoga teachers in honing their craft. Watching both students and teachers alike blossom into new versions of themselves is the most fulfilling work I could imagine!
In my free time, I love to write fiction, canoe in the Adirondacks, and hike with my husband and daughter. If you can't find me, I'm probably hiding out in my Jeep and singing awkward 80s rock ballads.
About Joe Millen, P.T.:
I am a licensed physical therapist with over 35 years of clinical practice and also a certified manual therapist. I became interested in physical therapy (PT) when I was in high school. I suffered a knee injury that required surgery and extensive rehabilitation at a sports medicine clinic. I also volunteered with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, working with children and adults suffering from muscular disease. I wanted to make a difference. So, I went to college and was fortunate to get into a very good physical therapy program at Oakland University.
Physical therapy is my passion, second only to my wife and family. I have made it my guiding principle to deliver the care that I would expect as an expert in the field. Over time, this has become more and more difficult, not because my principles have changed but because healthcare has changed. We have had to figure out who our client is – you, the patient/client, the third-party payer, the doctor referring to you, or all of the above. As an industry, we became more focused on who paid and referred than on who we were treating. That has never worked for me.
I believe that we need to be responsible to each other. You, as my client, are my focus; not your insurance company, not your referring doctor. I will communicate with them on your behalf, which is my professional responsibility. My approach with clients has developed over time. I realized I am much more successful when I approached every client assessment looking at the total body rather than any one pain or ailment. I now call this approach “Total Body Health and Wellness.”
